For the first time Cinta Baca (CB) ran a Story telling and coloring event in Pulau Lakkang. Story telling is one of our core programs and the children are really excited when such a program is put on at a local library. The room is filled with smiling and laughing children, but usually many parents also participate. This program was held the the Cakrawala reading Post on Friday Feb 5th, 2013. This reading post is located in the Kelurahan Lakkang, Kecamatan Tallo, near Makassar Sulawesi.
Melsy (CB Staff in Makassar) was incharge of running the story telling program this time. Prior to the story telling time Melsy lead the kids in a game of consentration for about 20 minutes, and the kids really found this funny. The children were really attentive and serious as Melsy then read the story for the day. The goal of these Storytelling times is to help the children get use to reading and do it all by themselves.
After the story time the children did some coloring as part of a coloring competition were kids won prizes. The kids worked hard at their artwork in hopes to win some prizes. The drawings were judged by the reading Post staf and other mothers and volunteers who were present. After the prizes were handed out the kids took the above group photo.
The Community at Pulai Lakkang has been very thankful to Cinta Baca for opening a reading post and running these kinds of programs. The wife of a locally elected leader said the following about the Cinta Baca:
“Having Cinta Baca here has really helped the community. The children are becoming smarter because of the activities and program. Please come here often and run more of these programs”
Let us continue to see the quality of education in Pulau Lakkang and all of Makassar increase, through prgrams like this that raise the excitement for reading. (Melsy)
