Helping Kids Care for the Environment-1

On April 14th children gathered at the village library in Pelabuhan Ratu for a special story telling time. Ibu Maria read them a story entitled “SOMI Pahlawan Sampah” or “SOMI the Trash Hero”. Somi is a young child who is greatly concerned about keeping his town trash free. Through this story the children learned the potential health impact of trash and began to grow an awarness for not poluting.

The children also talked about the difference between organic and non-organic trash. They learned how dry leaves and organik trash could be mixed to make good top soil. Non-organic trash like plastic water bottles could be recycled into other household items.

During the time the kids committed themselves to help each each to clean-up their area. It was interesting to see the kids come to the library with brooms, buckets and mops to help clean up the library. The kids took to cleaning the floor, dusting the books, cutting the grass and taking out the trash. All this activity by the kids even caught the attention of the town RT (Local elected village leader) Mr. Sobari who immediately came to the library to watch all that they were doing. The time together ended with some games and prizes and the children received some nutritious snacks.

The entire event not only had a positive impact on the kids, teaching them to guard their environment, but we also hope the presence of our reading post offering these kinds of programs will also be an inspiration to the community.
